I needed a tougher look to fight my way through this bitter winter weather. I have drawn inspiration from one of my favourite sassy characters of all time, Wanda Woodward from Cry Baby xo
Pastel Pink Velvet Skirt - DIY - Now that I have finally made a pattern for this skirt you can expect a lot more DIY tube skirts on the horizon :)
I ventured into the State Library of Victoria to check out Tonerpalooza: a
festival of the zines. My brother in law had flown down from New South Wales to share and exhibit his work and I had been
meaning to get my hands on a copy of his book, Electric Dreams.
This was my first attendance at a zine festival and I was unsure of what to
expect. One thing I always figure going into a creative space is that I will
feel comfortable. In all honesty I felt a bit awkward in the space and I think
a big part of that was because I received a lot of comments on my outfit. I
often have random people express their opinions on my outfits and majority of
the time it is really lovely but I get thrown off guard and am at a bit of a
loss for words when I receive outfit observations. I am sure you have
experienced the observation comment, it's when someone doesn't compliment you
and they may not be putting you down, they simply express a fact. In this case
it was "You must really like pink" and "You must really like
cats." Both of these things are correct but on the numerous occasions they
were said, it was with an almost condescending tone. This played into my
insecurity about not being taken seriously in some environments because I am
visually very femme and cutesy. This isn't a new experience for me and I think
there is a part of me that likes dressing like this to fuck with people’s
perceptions but it doesn't ease the discomfort in the moment.
I did end up getting my copy of Electric Dreams and a few zines from the
incredibly talented Gemma Flack who I have admired long term via Instagram.
I
also picked up a few bits and pieces from various cuties; I don't have everyone’s
names but if anyone reading does recognise someone and can provide names or
links in a comment that would be wonderful!
I would have loved more sugar sweet girly zines and since the fair I have been thinking that maybe I need to create my own. I'd really love to do something themed, filled with happy memories and cute things that make me smile when I am feeling sad. I'd really like it to be a contribution with a bunch of the cool women I know.
And of course I had a favourite outfit of the day, this magical babe in her
head to toe leopard print and divine heart belt had me seriously style
crushing. xo
When I was 5 years old, we moved in with my beautiful Granny for a period. I have two strong memories of her house, one was the rosary beads she use to give me to sleep with when I was having bad dreams and the second was an ethereal painting of a unicorn in a forest, that hung above my bed. The painting had belonged to my Aunty and I would lay in bed staring at it and daydreaming about the little unicorn jumping out of the painting and curling up on my lap.
Many years later I can now have best of both worlds, my adorable cats Ruby Soho and Lil Foot curled up on my lap and magical unicorns all through my wardrobe. xo
The new Lazy Oaf collection "Space Oddity" is now available online and it is out of this world!
I know I post nearly every time they release something new but I can't help myself, I am madly in love with this label. Current wish list is the Space Waffle Skirt , the Fur Face Jacket and the Cosmos Dress. What's on your wish list? Xo
I've recently rekindled my love for sewing. I think sometimes with
creative passions you end up in ruts and need to take a little break but
it's always such a wonderful feeling to be excited about it again. Over
the last year I have done simple alterations
or taken in a vintage piece but I haven’t dreamt up a piece and made it
come to life. I struggle with winter fashion because I really feel the
cold and I find it so difficult to find cute pieces that are actually
warm. This time last year I released a capsule
collection of two printed sweaters to fulfill this hole in my wardrobe
but this year I haven’t had the time to put into it or the funds to
invest and have put it on hold for now. I started to daydream about my
perfect sweater and put together this pastel, mermaid
crew neck. My sewing skills are a little rusty and this was the first
time I had ever worked with the fabric used on the sleeves (not
something I am in a rush to do again). I had initially planned on
putting together a tutorial with a beginner sewer in mind
but it just isn’t the right fabric for a beginner to be working with
and I wouldn’t want to leave you feeling as frustrated as I was hehe. So
here is the final product and an outfit themed around DIY.
Pastel Mermaid Crew Neck - DIY
Pastel Heart Skirt - DIY - This was initial a kids tee that I wore once (the below is the only before shot I have) that I decided would get more wear out of as a skirt.
Pastel Bracelet - I admired this DIY bracelet on a lovely lady that works at my local supermarket and the next time I came in, she had made me one :)
Keeping in
the spirit of DIY I took a trip out to Spotlight
on the weekend. This is always a solo mission because I have a tendency
to fall into a time warp and spend hours wandering the aisles and day
dreaming about various projects I want to do. The problem is by the time
I get home I have had such a sensory overload
that i have forgotten nearly everything I have seen. I have set a very
strict rule for myself that I am not allowed to purchase fabric unless I
have a specific project in mind because I have a tiny little dollhouse
of an apartment that already has a blanket
box full of hoarded fabric. I am sharing a little photo log of some of
the things that inspired me and also as a reminder to myself of upcoming DIY projects.
And a few little cute things I saw on the way home :) xo
