Little video to go with my outfit post, wanted to show how cute these " Stairway to heaven" stairs are. Not a lot to write about this week, I haven't started on any creative projects as yet but am really enjoying relaxing and watching Stranger Things. I am late to the party but obviously was trying to focus on uni work and I was without home internet for four months, which meant no netflix :(. Apart from Stranger Things is there anything I must watch? Let me know your current favourites xx
Even though it is only Tuesday, this is already
feeling like a very hectic and long week. At the moment I feel like I don’t have
enough hours in the day and am setting myself extensive to do lists
every night in attempt to cram everything in before a relaxing weekend
away in Newcastle. I don’t currently plan on taking my camera with me, so I may be skipping over an outfit post next week.
At the end of last week I went fabric shopping
to check on some stock for custom orders and grabbed the last bolt of
scale fabric for the “Mermaid Scale Sweater.”
I still have enough to
make a couple of more so if you are interested in
one please email me at hipbonesandheartbreak@hotmail.com . I am thoroughly enjoying sewing again and next
year I really want to get a bit more focused with it and start making
more garments to sell a bit more regularly.
A cool thing happened over the weekend, I woke
up on Sunday and noticed a bit of an influx of followers on my instagram
and was trying to work out where my new pals had come from. I received a
comment from a lady from lookbook.nu saying
that I had been posted on their instagram! I was pretty chuffed about
this, especially considering I was wearing a top that I had made. I went
to check out the post and my excitement pretty quickly turned to hurt
feelings when I read some of the things people
were saying. I’ve never experienced negativity directed towards me
online and I guess it caught me off guard. I am making this sound a lot
worse than it was, there was maybe 3 or 4 nasty comments amongst really
lovely ones, I am not sure why we do this as
humans but I instantly focused on the negative ones. I’ve never been a
person to say unkind things on the internet. If I see something I don’t like I just keep scrolling, or if I dislike
it enough, I unfollow. I think I find it really hard to relate to why
someone would take the time out of their day to be nasty and negative,
why bother? Or if they value their time so
little that they are willing to waste it, maybe they could hand me over
a few hours! If I see someone wearing an outfit that isn’t my taste or
doesn’t make sense to me, the thought process is more along the lines
of, if they love what they are wearing and
feel good about themselves, good for them.
Luckily I had my boyfriend visiting for the
weekend and he managed to get me to refocus on the positive of the
situation, he is incredibly talented (*embarrassing proud girlfriend)
and makes drumming you tube videos and has experienced
“internet meanies.” He told me some of the silly things people had
written about him and put things into perspective, we had a giggle and I realised that I wasn’t going
to let a couple of nasty comments take away from something I was happy
about.
I know that everyone
is entitled to their opinion and having an opinion is exactly what I am
doing with this post but I think that some times in the technology age, people forget that there is a real person behind the image they are commenting on. Just because you have this space (the Internet)
to put every single thought you have out there, doesn't mean you
shouldn't do it with out a bit of thought and care, or maybe not put it out there at all because it really isn't adding but rather taking something away .
Well now I've got
that little bit of my chest back to this weeks outfit post. For the
last outfit post for spring I had to go with a bit of a floral theme xo
So the spending ban continues and as previously stated, I am venturing into the depths of my current wardrobe. It's really easy to look at what you currently have and utter the famous line "I have nothing to wear!" So to force myself out of that rut, I went with a heart theme..xo
Pink Heart Earrings - These were given to me ages ago, I am pretty sure they are from Diva
Sulky Star Gazer Wooden Brooch - Powder Pink - Mel Stringer - One of the last purchases I made before my ban. Absolutely adore all her artwork and had the most difficult time trying to decide which brooch to pick out of this series - of course ended up going with the pink haired girl.
Quilted Heart Pocket Skirt - ASOS - Old season - For some reason I find white skirts tricky to style so this doesn't get enough wear. Reminder to self about white broderie anglais Wheels & Dollbaby skirt that I need to drag out for Summer.
They had a $2.00 sale on at my local thrift store and I ended up purchasing 5 items, I would have gotten a lot more if I wasn't restricted by a half hour lunch break. This outfit is predominantly thrifted items because as I am sure I have mentioned, Winter isn't my favourite season and I tend to scrimp a bit during this time on clothing purchases.
I also watched The Punk Singer: A Film about Kathleen Hanna the night before putting together this look so I have stolen a bit of inspiration from her - high pony tail and an almost thrifted cheerleader/valley girl aesthetic.
Hair Bow - I think I pinched this from my sister (note to self: add DIY bows to projects list)
Pastel Pink Velvet Skirt - DIY - Now that I have finally made a pattern for this skirt you can expect a lot more DIY tube skirts on the horizon :)
I ventured into the State Library of Victoria to check out Tonerpalooza: a
festival of the zines. My brother in law had flown down from New South Wales to share and exhibit his work and I had been
meaning to get my hands on a copy of his book, Electric Dreams.
This was my first attendance at a zine festival and I was unsure of what to
expect. One thing I always figure going into a creative space is that I will
feel comfortable. In all honesty I felt a bit awkward in the space and I think
a big part of that was because I received a lot of comments on my outfit. I
often have random people express their opinions on my outfits and majority of
the time it is really lovely but I get thrown off guard and am at a bit of a
loss for words when I receive outfit observations. I am sure you have
experienced the observation comment, it's when someone doesn't compliment you
and they may not be putting you down, they simply express a fact. In this case
it was "You must really like pink" and "You must really like
cats." Both of these things are correct but on the numerous occasions they
were said, it was with an almost condescending tone. This played into my
insecurity about not being taken seriously in some environments because I am
visually very femme and cutesy. This isn't a new experience for me and I think
there is a part of me that likes dressing like this to fuck with people’s
perceptions but it doesn't ease the discomfort in the moment.
I did end up getting my copy of Electric Dreams and a few zines from the
incredibly talented Gemma Flack who I have admired long term via Instagram.
I
also picked up a few bits and pieces from various cuties; I don't have everyone’s
names but if anyone reading does recognise someone and can provide names or
links in a comment that would be wonderful!
I would have loved more sugar sweet girly zines and since the fair I have been thinking that maybe I need to create my own. I'd really love to do something themed, filled with happy memories and cute things that make me smile when I am feeling sad. I'd really like it to be a contribution with a bunch of the cool women I know.
And of course I had a favourite outfit of the day, this magical babe in her
head to toe leopard print and divine heart belt had me seriously style
crushing. xo
